Is Feng Zhu's School Worth the Investment? A Freelance Concept Artist's Perspective
The Feng Zhu School Dilemma
As a freelance concept artist with years of experience under my belt, I've often pondered the value of attending a specialized art school like Feng Zhu's. On the one hand, the promise of accelerated learning and mentorship from industry veterans is undeniably alluring. On the other hand, the hefty price tag and the potential sacrifice of personal time and creative freedom raise serious concerns.
I really really, REALLY wanted to go to Feng Zhu Design School when I was younger, so much I wrote on Polycount forums for some soul searching back in 2015.
I ended up not enrolling in the school, I just didn’t have the money, but do I regret it? Yes and no.
I wish I’d have enrolled in the glamour lifestyle of the digital artist from Europe moving to Singapore to study under FZD, but I couldn’t afford it, worse, I couldn’t afford to put that pressure on my parents.
And so, lot of buzz was generated in the early days of my career, while I was considering going to FZD School and asked around myself, this post over at Polycount, inspired me to write my own.
Navigating the Maze of Artistic Education
The art world is a vast and often confusing landscape, brimming with diverse paths and educational options. For aspiring concept artists, the allure of a structured program like Feng Zhu's can be particularly strong. The prospect of gaining a solid foundation in the fundamentals, coupled with the opportunity to learn from seasoned professionals, seems like a recipe for success.
However, it's crucial to approach such decisions with a discerning eye and a realistic understanding of one's own goals and aspirations. While attending a specialized school can provide valuable guidance and accelerate the learning process, it's not the only path to success in the concept art realm. Architects, Actors, Inventors, Scientists… many famous professionals who made a name for themselves in their industry, did not have formal training, other than the mastery and repetition of hours invested into the craft.
Mastery, by Robert Greene, is one of my favourite books on the matter, did you know the guys who invented the first plane were just hobbyists and running agaisn’t a successful team of engineers? And the guy who decoded the Egyptian alphabet had no formal training whatsoever, and was self-taught? All of these inspiring stories are more can be found in Mastery. It remains one of my favourite books, and one of the first non-art skill books I picked up during the early years of my self-taught journey, it sure as eck inspired me greatly, and I hope it inspires you as well. My Journey as a Self-Taught Concept Artist

So, is Feng Zhu's School worth the investment? The answer, like many things in art, is not entirely straightforward. For those seeking a structured learning environment and the mentorship of experienced professionals, Feng Zhu's School undoubtedly offers a valuable experience.
However, it's essential to weigh the financial implications carefully. The cost of attendance is significant, and it's crucial to determine if the investment aligns with your personal goals and financial situation.
With me, I felt more comfortable watching Youtube tutorials, drawing from anatomy books, and finding a few courses online from professional artists who I wanted to learn from, I tried to reverse engineer the FZD school programme and find whichever artists I wanted to select as my new teachers. A few places I learned online were LearnSquared, Gnomon DVDs, and Domestika. (This one I’ve used a lot as of late, there is such a wide range of individuals teaching there including and beyond the Concept Art and Game Development realm, that I felt compelled to keep a subscription with them, it’s rather cheap as well, given the amount of content they have, I’ve added a affiliate code with a exclusive discount, provided by Domestika for my readers!)
A Caveat from a Freelance Concept Artist
As a freelance concept artist, I've witnessed firsthand the diversity of talent and the various paths that lead to success. While a specialized art school can provide a structured framework, it's not the sole determinant of artistic growth.
The most important qualities of a successful concept artist are unwavering dedication, an insatiable curiosity, and a willingness to experiment and learn. These traits can be cultivated through self-study, mentorship, and real-world experience.
